| Marios Matsakis has today announced he will be running for president. Possibly he will take 3-4% - mainly away from Papadopoulos and so finally do a service to the country. |

...his heart is in the right place.
as for TPap, he is the best candidate for resolving this Problem, but, and a big but, he would have to have an epiphany first. Without it, I am afraid of the possibilities. |

| Yes, all 3 main candidates will most likely end up with more than 30% in the first round. In some way that means the looser will be the king maker... |

...hmm, scary. (imo)
unless Christofias wins, or Kasoulides wins, tempered by the support of TPap.
am i wrong to be afraid of TPap as our negociator? is Christofias no better in this case.
can either C or K demonstrate the sang froide that will be needed against Turkey's excellent abilities, all the while providing an alternative to the present impasse and the threat of a partition? |

The count down for the elections has started and it looks like the three main contenders will finish within a nostril of each other. Our only hope for a brighter future is for Christofias and Kasoulides to agree that saving Cyprus is of paramount importance and that petty ideological differences have no place in the noble struggle to save Cyprus. Otherwise, even if Papadopoulos is defeated by one of them, he will play a major role in the election of the new President and he will bargain really hard before he throws his weight behind someone, gaining the necessary concessions, of course.
Thus, I would rather see Papadopoulos defeated in the second round and the two big parties making their long due historical compromise in order to get rid, once and forever, of the stupid divide that has seen the path to the solution of the Cyprus problem fall victim to party politics on so many occasions. |

I'm not holding my breath. I doubt if any Cypriot politician has the intellect to tackle the huge problems we have today. Having well meaning words is not enough. We need someone will balls to make some very tough decisions and I doubt if any of these people have it in them to do what is needed. |

Who is more likely to get Tpaps support in case he is defeated in the first round? Christofias or Kasoulides? |

Chistofias and Akel are the biggest hypocrites in the history of Cyprus.
I was hoping that if they get into power they will make some changes towards a socialist society, however reading their policy booklet their positions are more capitalist than Tpap or Kasoulides!!!!
At least they should change the name of their party back to KKK (Καπιταλιστικό Κόμμα Κύπρου - Capitalist Party of Cyprus) or ΓΚΚ (Γραφειοκρατικό Κόμμα Κύπρου).
As for the parties Ecological Movement and Socialist Movement...έλεος, two left wing parties backing up Papadopoullos!!!!
When will we have a real socialist party in Cyprus? |

The official result is:
TP 31.8%
IK 33.5%
DC 33.3%
Not too far off...
The 2nd round is still open..., in an exit poll 2/3 of the TP voters said they did not yet know who to vote for if TP is out in the first round.
IK does look strong, there are also some leading DIKO people, like EU Commisioner Markos Kyrianou, that are unofficial IK supporters...
The final decision of the DIKO/EDEK/EKOLOGI (Evroko can not vote DC) will be very important.
Possibly the candidate that sells his sole to the devil will win... |

second round today...
Kasoulides, whose love of Hellenism is almost embarassing says he'll be at Talat's door on Monday, which is very positive.
Christofias shows himself aggressive with journalists, and says that his invitation to Talat will come from the UN...i thought they were friends.
what gives? |
