Without question, there is nothing more enjoyable or beautiful for that matter than to sit by the Marina in kyrenia/Girne chilling out with over a beer. That for me is an amazing experience. I love coming over the mountains with the sea in view and coming down into the town. It is great. I think if I had to pick a single place out this would be it. On the other hand, having grown up in Ireland where our culture is to go away an get drunk for two weeks, again Cyprus is a winner with Ayia Napa!! People living in Cyprus do not know how lucky they are to live on such a beautiful Island with two amazingly different Cultures. Its a shame there is a division. My father was born in Larnaca and in the 60's his family moved to Lefkose/Nicosia. After the division his family lived and still do today in Northern Cyprus. I am proud to be a decendant of a Cypriot. Some day I hope to make my home in Cyprus. Has anyone ever been to Ireland? Trust me when I say, if you have not, you have not missed much!!

What makes you say that the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot cultures are so amazingly different,IrishCypriot??? Not taking into account the settlers of course...
This is a serious enquiry...I'd love to know what a foreigner sees when they look at the two sides...

First of all, im not a plonker lionfish and I dont appreciate that language. I suppose when you live in a place long enough you grow tired of it, well some people any way and I happen to be on of them. I dont question the beauty of Ireland, but at the same time I lived here in 1987, I live here now in 2007. In that time, Ireland has changed from a very Poor country with no infastructure to a power house economy, with that brought huge changes not least in the people. I find Ireland a much more ignorant place today then it was 20 years ago and I not saying all Irish are but it has changed so much, some say for the better, others say for the worse. I think Ireland has lost its character, its not the 40shades of green, nor the little men with red hair and green coats. Ireland has grown up. Yeah, there are still great places in Ireland but my overall perception has changed so much with Ireland because the Irish culture changed over night.

I live in Dublin, I have been here for one year. Before that I lived in Belfast during the last 5years of the Irish Troubles and before that I lived in a town called Cashel in Co Tipperary. For me, Dublin has become one of the most ignorant places on earth. I remeber when it was friendly here, but people are too concerned with getting from A-Z as quickly as possible. I live in a quite part of Dublin, in an area called Harolds Cross. I have a park near my house and I have a Dog Racing track very close to me which is good fun to go to.

Nobody has actually told me what there favourite place in Cyprus is???? Your all more concerened with telling me im wrong and that Ireland is beautiful!!

Differnent cultures, yes, I suppose its more to do with new generations of people growing up on different sides of the border, Ok, I admit that I have only been to Cyprus once since the border has been open but I have been on both sides many times. In the north I see, particularialy with the older generation, a people very content with life, who are living their lives as if nothing has happened where as on the South, the same generation are much more opinionated and far more active in life pre 1974. I remeber crossing the border and old women mourning the sons sat on the south side, in the north there was none of that. Also, with the younger generation, I see the northerns a lot like the younger turks in coastal areas of turkey. Maybe that is changing again? But I have been to turkey and I see great similarities. With South cypriots, they are like they always have been, they are very active in the social night life scene with tourists in places ayia napa, perhaps the northerns were not like this because of the sanctions and no real growth oportunities for an ayia napa in the north. I dont know. I do see a difference but that has solely been because of the border. Two Cypriot peoples who co-existed have lived in seperate ways for the best part of 40years, that is bound to change people, there way of lives and culture, particularily in the south where they have had huge economic income in comparison to the north. I may be wrong, but this is just my opinion and I do not mean to offend any one and if i do please let me know.

If you want to know more about me or my family please ask. Also, is everyone who wrote replies living in Cyprus here?

Thanks for that explanation,IrishCypriot...And don't worry mate,we cannot afford to be easily offended in these forums...One develops a thick skin fast or get out... Wink Laughing

Your observations regarding the North confirm my fears and argument that the Turkish Cypriot culture is under seige and fast eroding in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus...The settlers from Turkey are in the majority there now and the pressure on the Turkish Cypriots to Turkify is immense....As far as the mainland Turks are concerned Turkish Cypriots can never be Turkish enough or muslim enough...And their Cypriot accent is an abomination which must be get rid of...The real Turkish Cypriot culture lives in the Turkish Cypriots in the diaspora. We have grown and evolved of course but maintain the essence of the old Turkish Cypriot culture which is not much different than the old Greek Cypriot culture...(Customs ,tradition, food, world view, personality traits, sense of humour etc...) When we in the diaspora die out the Turkish Cypriot culture will only live in the Greek Cypriots in the South...Till globalisation and EU spirit totally takes over, and non of the old Cypriot culture is left anywhere....Sad really... Crying or Very sad

I honestly believe that it is just not true that mainland Turkish settlers outnumber non settlers in North Cyprus. Not from official numbers or from my personal perception. The fact is that mainland settlers in Cyprus (of which there is a broad spectrum of different types btw) as far as they can be generalised and regardless of their numbers are economically and politically weaker than non settlers. If there is any 'looking down' going on it is from Turkish Cypriots looking down on the settlers as inferior and not visa versa. Personally as a Turkish Cypriot I am ashamed of the degree of prejudice shown by some Turkish Cypriot towards settlers.

There is no excuse for treating the settlers with any prejudice or discrimination of course,Erol...They are after all guests in the North...
The real culprits, those who have come years ago,got given lots of Greek Cypriot refugee land, have cashed in and left by now...Present day settlers are people who seek to better themselves economically, largely by doing the jobs nonsettlers (to use your term) will turn their noses at...But that is not the real problem...What ever the numbers, and i see little point in arguing that point, whatever the numbers the pressure on the Turkish Cypriot culture comes from the top...From the government in Ankara, the military Chiefs, and of course the commander of the so-called Peace Forces in Cyprus...The pressure is to become more Turkish and more Islamic, till there is no differnce between turkishCypriots and Turks...I would suggest, with due respect Erol, that not being a Turkish speaker and essentially seeing the world with Anglo eyes, you are missing a lot of the subtle cultural aspects being eroded every day...Feel free to challenge me if you think i am wrong here...as I have no doubt you will... Favourite place hmmm... dificult to answer but I'll say the high peaks of Pentadaktylos mountains.

It will be easier to answer the least favourite: on an old building in the old part of Lefkosia looking at Ayia Sophia that became a mosque and in the background the flags on the Pentadaktylos!

Turkish settlers in North, another thing that makes me wonder... how many are they, official sources say they are approximately twice as many as the Turkish Cypriots. Friends of mine say they fear that turkish settlers are more than four times the Turkish Cypriots and now Erolz you say that you believe Turkish Cypriots are more than the settlers! Does anyone know?

What 'official' sources are these ?

The latest Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus census puts the number of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus citizens at 178k. Of these 46k have no cypriot parents and of this 46k, 30k were born outside of cyprus and 16k born in cyprus.

In addition to the 178k Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus citizens there were 77k non citizen residents in North Cyprus on the day of the census. This 77k is not just Turkish mainlanders of course but includes British and other 'expats' residing in Cyprus and foreign students and workers residing in Cyprus at the time of the census.

Of course you can argue these figures are all lies and that in fact for every Turkish Cypriot living in the north there is 4 Turkish mainland settlers living here. However such an argument is not credible to me and not born out by my own subjective impression from living in the north.

In the North!
My favorite place in Cyprus is Ayios Helirions Castle and also Koufi Petra!
The beach in Arkotissa is also fantastic:

In the Sth!
It is Ayia Napa: I love sitting on the beach and perving at all the naked women!
I just dig a 12 inch hole in the sand and lay face down with my Elvis Mirror Sunglasses on!
What a buzz!
cheers!
