First of all it's 2005 and both Greek and Turkish Cypriots are closer to unification and peace then ever before. No one has a problem with that but in the last years, especially with Talat gaining success Turks have started to think Turkish Cypriots somehow aren't happy with whats happened in Cyprus since 1974. I myself have sensed that some Turkish Cypriots hold Turkey guilty for todays situation so seeing this is a Cypriot forum i'd like to ask Turkish Cypriots a few questions. I'd like to see what people think on the issue.
1) Do Turkish Cypriots wish the events in 1974 never took place? I mean would it have been better if Turkey never interfered?
2) Is Turkey the biggest obstacle on the path that leads to unification?
3) Do you think Turkey should back off and allow Turkish Cypriots to solve the problem themselves?
Thanx in advance. |

There was no choice, it was that or the Turkish Cypriot would have been wiped out hence the akritas plan and the Turkish Cypriot will never forget that and you have our thanks.

At the moment 'yes' Turkey has encouraged many turkish nationals to come and settle in cyprus and inreturn has given them Greek Cypriot lands for doing so and the property issue is one our biggest sticking point and what will happen to the 'settlers' that are there now.

I feel Turkey has a solid control over the Turkish Cypriot as they have and are funding the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Goverment and is also using the Turkish Cypriot for her own political needs.
I feel that turkey needs to let the Turkish Cypriot now make their own decisions and respect them and support her if asked. |

I wish I could believe that It is 2005 and I do not think we are any closer to a solution that at any other time since 74 :(

Most Turkish Cypriot I believe are very greatful for the action Turkey took in 74, the cost it has paid since and the lives it lost. Whilst we also lament the loses to Greek Cypriot from these acts material and in terms of lives we do feel it was necessary for Turkey to intervene in Cyprus. Without it there is a realistic chance that the Greek Junta would not have fallen and the the coupist in Cyprus could have gained control and that would have almost certaibly meant horrednous times for the Turkish Cypriot community in Cyprus - as well as much suffering for Greek Cypriot as well.

It depends what you mean by reunification. If you consider the Turkish Cypriot community simply acceding to any and all demands of the Greek Cypriot community in terms of how Cyprus should be, then yes Turkey is an obstacle to 'unification' (captulation of Turkish Cypriot community and accepting the loss of the legal and consitituional rights).

I do not think that Turkey could or even would thwart the clear cut will of the Turkish Cypriot community over what happens in Cyprus. That is my beleif. Without Turkey's support for our 'cause' (the resotoration of our rights under the consitituion of Cyprus) we would have no hope or chance of gaining back what is justly ours - namely a real say in the government of our homeland. That is my view.
I think Turkey could have behaved differently after 74 and in many ways I wish it had. However if the choice is Turkey as it did behave after 74 or no invovlement of Turkey in Cypriot affairs at all, I would chose the former over the latter. |

Thank you for the replies. As much as i can understand Turkish Cypriots are grate full for what Turkey has done but also want some space of there own. I asked these questions cause during the Annan plan and the elections many Turkish intellectuals hinted that Turkish Cypriots weren't very fond of Turkey therefore Turkey should sacrifice Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to enter the EU. There was a phrase Talat used that made all Turks think, before the referendum Talat said " Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is Turkey's mistress" and that Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus needs to break free from Turkey. But on the other hand Denktaş said the Turkish Cypriot and Turkish media were deliberately imposing bad thoughts for one another so i'm not sure whether to believe Talat or Denktaş...
Erolz you said Turkey could have behaved differently in many way since 1974, can you please open that up a bit? What policy was wrong in your opinion or what should have Turkey done according to you? |

I would just start with a disclaimer. I was not in power at the time (or now for that matter) and it is easy to say what should have been done when you are not the one that has to do it. I also have 30 years of hindsight on which to base these opinions.
Turkey could and should in my opinion have made more effort to 'restore a constitutional order' and less to impose a forced partition imho.
They could have taken less land when imposing partition and thus created less refugess, though having deiced to impose partition it was necessary that the Turkish Cypriot area was 'viable' as a seperate 'administarive area / state'.
They could have not taken varosha, or haveing taken it returned it without condition at aerliest opportunity.
To be honest though I am not sure what the value is with these musing. You have asked and I have done my best to answer but I am not sure of the value of the question or my answers ? |

imo (and i remember pre 74 well) without turkish intervention Turkish Cypriot's would have become at best a decimated second class minority, which was what Makarios was working to achieve, and would have achieved in the longer term had there been no coup. or at worse Turkish Cypriots would have been ethnically cleansed from cyprus altogether.
this is only my opinion.
i am grateful for turkish intervention. |
