I am not talking about sheer numbers , I am talking about the content.
I guess we all know the hoaxes with little kids that suffer from horrible illnesses or the so called 'Nigeria connection'.
But today I found the following in my inbox and really asked myself how far people go with their fraud attempts...

Quote:
Hello

I am MAJOR MIKE WILLIAMS, I am a British soldier attached to UN peace Keeping force in Iraq, I am the commanding officer of the First Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment, as you may know everyday, there are several cases of insurgent’s attacks and suicide bombs going on here.

We managed to Move funds belonging to some demised persons who were attacked and killed through insurgent attacks. The total amount is US$10 Million dollars in cash. We want to move this money to you, so that you may keep our share for us until when we shall come over to meet you.

We will take 60%, my partner and I. You take 40%. No strings attached, just help us move it out of Iraq, Iraq is a war zone.

We plan on using Diplomatic courier and shipping the money out in two large metallic boxes, using diplomatic immunity. If you are interested I will send you the full details; my job is to find a good partner that we can trust and that will assist us. Can I trust you? When you receive this letter, kindly send me an e-mail signifying your interest including your most confidential telephone/fax numbers for quick communication and also your contact details.

This business is 100% risk free.

Respectfully,

MAJOR MIKE WILLIAMS

Needless to say, the fraudster probably has nothing to do with the UK armed forces.

The best way to stop this sort of thing is to have a good spam filter on your mail server so that such emails are never even seen. As far I as I am concerned there are only two email providers who do this well enough:

Google Mail (free)

fastmail.fm (some paid options, but the facilities are staggering for £10 a year)

The fraud that is really annoying me at the moment is companies collecting old clothing, bedding, towels etc. for "poor people in Eastern Europe". We are getting 2 or 3 of these a week putting flyers through our door!

And they are fraudulent; the giveaways are that the contact email addresses on the flyers are hotmail.com or yahoo.com (usually) - any even semi-decent organisation would have its own domain - and the companies are almost always about to be wound up. (A company registers them, after 2 years, is automatically closed down if it fails to file any accounts; in those 2 years it can do a lot of damage ...)

TheBrix, it wasn't about the spam. I have enough protection. This landed also in the spam folder. But I usually have a quick glance at whats in there in order to prevent any serious mail getting lost. This one caught my attention cause the sender was not one of the usual easy recognizable spam senders.
So I was curious and checked what it was. I don't usually read any spam.

P.S. I'm still using Kaspersky Internet Security. Smile
