Yesterday evening, we have seen the first major outcome of a period of activities between the two Cypriot left parties of TKP (Toplumcu Kurtulus Parisi - People's Liberation Party) and BDH (Baris ve Demokrasi Hareketi - Peace and Democracy Movement).
The two parties decided to unite their forces under the new formation which will be known as the TDP ( Toplumcu Demokrasi Partisi - People's Democracy Party). It is expected that the new formation will be made official by the registration process which will be made at the ministry of interior in the coming days.
Note that BDH acted in year 2003 as an umbrella under which many Cypriot left parties, except CTP, temporarily united their forces for the election that took place in that year. See here for the results. This is not a unification of that kind. There will never be a party called TKP or BDH anymore.
I believe the next task on the way to success is the unification with BKP ( Birlesik Kibris Partisi - United Cyprus Party). Let's hope that it will be a similarly smooth process.
On a side note, as Mr. Akinci and Mr. Angolemli made it clear since the beginning of the unification, they will not be candidates for the new party administration for sake of opening the way for younger Cypriot leftists.
I truly believe that Mustafa Akinci is a politician who deserved much bigger success as a party leader (he was also the major of Nicosia from TKP). I am not the only one who thinks like this: Over the years, his honesty and consistency in his ideas, his open mindedness, his firm pro-solution & pro-peace stance, even at the darkest times of our political life helped to create a very high opinion about him among the Turkish Cypriot elite, no matter from which side they are coming from.
He has always been the man ahead of his people, a very difficult thing to do and deserves much respect for it. There are times that I can't stop myself thinking that we, the Turkish Cypriot community, do not deserve a man of this caliber.
Anyway, if I am not mistaken and if he has not changed his mind, I believe he will no longer take place in active politics after the end of his term. So, thank you Mr. Akinci for everything! Your selfless efforts into our people and country will never be forgotten. |

| Thank you for the info moonskin. I agree with everything you said about Akinci. I wish the new party formed all the best. Is the United Cyprus Party Alpay Durduran's party? |

No. United Cyprus Party is Izzet Izcan's and Ozker Ozgur's party. Durduran's party is called New Cyprus Party but it was known as the Patriotic Unity Movement in the past . |

That sounds like good news.
It seems to be always a problem especially of left movements/parties/people to come to terms with each other and unite their power. Same here in Germany - now and also in the past. |

Left in Cyprus (an anywhere else in my opinion) is like Ottoman military band. They take one step forward followed by two steps backwards.
I agree though Akinci is one of the few politicians in Cyprus who truly cares about Cyprus and its people as a whole. |
