no!, you miss the point, we are different, whether turcophone or grecophone, Cypriot, not Turkish, not Greek.

...so we say Cypriot, because we choose to be different...and to be different we say Turkish Cypriot, or Greek Cypriot...

When Turks from Turkey ask me I say "I am a Cypriot".They usually change the subject very quickly,or say "You don't sound like one"... Very Happy

When Greeks from Greece ask me I say "Cypriot".They always start speaking to me in Greek.I say "I am from the other side!".They always laugh and say they won't hold it against me.

When others ask me I say "Cypriot".Usually they assume I am a Greek Cypriot and I don't correct them unless I have to.

If this group ask "Greek or Turkish Cypriot"? I say "I am a Real Cypriot-part Greek, partTurkish, part Armenian, and part Maronite..."
They too change the subject very quickly. Laughing

I say what I feel and that is a Turkish Cypriot. What is the problem with this? What is the problem if someone calls themself a Greek Cypriot? Are we traitors to the state because we identify with our cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic heritage? No. People in Cyprus have to learn to co-exist regardless of differences. Imposing a uniform identity and branding everyone else traitors is not the way.

There is nothing wrong with feeling and saying Turkish Cypriot,Khan.
As long as that doesn't make you feel superior or better than other Cypriots. I also feel like Turkish Cypriot, after all that is what I am.That is our essence and we cannot deny it.I choose to make or not to make a political statement by calling myself just "Cypriot" depending on the circumstances...

I agree with Birkibrisli. We don't need to get rid of our Turkishness or Greekness to live together. I'd rather live in a country where everyone considered themselves Greek or Turkish alone but they respected and celebrated their differences instead.

It really doesn't matter what you choose to call yourself as long as you realize that we're all humans and differences are something to celebrate not to hold against someone.

Mete there will Never be a United Cyprus IF we Say Greek and Turkish:
In Australia no one gives a damn of what your ethnic background is:
In the US most of the Ethnic background was English, French and Spanish and America is only a few 100 years old and they don't care!
BUT this Greek and Turkish Labeling has caused division for so many years:
IF Turkey entered the EU before Cyprus they wouldn't give a damn about a solution to Cyprus:
As for the Greeks they would of establish big investment in Turkey and they wouldn't give a damn about Cyprus either!
BUT THANKS to the GREAT Richard Holbrooke Cyprus is the DOOR Turkey must open to enter the EU and it doesn't matter how much BULL Turkey does they wont be ABLE to bluff there way into the EU!
cheers

Speak to muslim or an aboriginal community and tell me if they feel the same way. Australia has one of the worst record for treatment of the indigenous people in the world.

Apart from that, I'll say generally in Australia is good, personally I never felt discriminated but I am always asked the question 'what natio are you?' and I never say Australian even if I have a passpords, why? because i don't feel that way.

mete, bir and Khan, i liked your comments

Ah again the demand for Utopia,

While we are at it, I also ask for a night with Adriana Lima (I am sure I can get my wife to approve just for one night!!!)....

On a serious note about feeling as a Turkish Cypriot not just Cypriot: I really would like to say that I am only Cypriot, but I will refuse those temptations until the day I see majority of Greek Cypriot says they are only Cypriot not Greek Cypriot.

For a Turkish Cypriot to accept that they are only Cypriot while Greek Cypriots are refusing to accept the same thing means that there is only one "People" on the island with one "Right of Self-Determination" on the island belonging to Cypriots and this would mean disaster if majority of Greek Cypriots do not just feel Cypriot.

So if one day I see the Greekness among the Greek Cypriots on decline then that day I will feel much more comfortable in announcing that I am just a Cypriot.

It's a self-preservation thing you know.

It is not hard to say i am a Cypriot to those that realy believe that they are Cypriots , but i'm afraid there are too many people from both sides that demand to be known as one or the other , and that is another problem that could take forever to sort out

Hey in a few years when we all become civilized we will ALL say EU citizens from Cyprus:
No one in the EU will care if you are Greek Cypriot or Turkish Cypriot!
What do we say in Australia?
Greek Australians?
Italians Australians?
Pommy Australians?
Turkish Australians?
Ect! ect! ect!
BUT then what do the Aborigines call themselves?

Maybe we have got it wrong?
Maybe we should say:
Greek Cypriot!
Turkish Cypriot!
Pommy Cypriot!
Aussie Cypriot!
Cypriot Cypriot!
Armenian Cypriot!
Maronite Cypriot!
Settler Cypriot!
BUT what will the Turks and the Greeks call themselves?
They cant be Greek Cypriot or Turkish Cypriot can they?
cheers
PS How many Nationalities ARE WE????
Hey I have an idea!
What if we just call ourselves F*CKEN Cypriot! Sounds Good to me!

The sad thing is when I used to live overseas when asked I never feel the need to tell that I am a Turkish Cypriot but was simply calling myself Cypriot. Every Greek Cypriot that I know also called themselves just Cypriot not Greek Cypriot.

I guess something bad happens when you come back to this god foresaken island.

You should tell this to the historical Turkish Cypriot leadership and its ideological remnants in the current Turkish Cypriot leadership, which have invented, cultivated and keep maintaining the notion of the "existence" of two separate people (and after 1974 of two separate "nation-states,") in Cyprus, as the flagship of their propaganda struggle and the basis of any solution to the Cyprus issue. None of the Greek Cypriot leaderships or any of the major political movements among the Greek Cypriot society maintain such a notion, and the official Greek Cypriot political stance on the issue was always that in Cyprus there is only one people, which is all the lawful inhabitants of the island. Others have kept telling (and still do) the whole world precisely the opposite.

I think that far away it is enough to be Cypriot, but once on the island people might wonder what sort of Cypriot..., in order to select language of communication, foresee context of communication, etc.
