Ladies & Gentlemen! Lend me your EARS!
Hasn't Cyprus got it's own Identity in the UN?
Hasn't Cyprus got its own Passports?
What do other nationalities call themselves?
Irish/English?
Italian/French?
English/Australians?
What does the EU say about us?
What does the EU call us?
Why cant we say citizens of Europe?
Country of Origin? Cyprus!
Just say "I am Cypriot!"
Language? Greek and English!
Language? Turkish and English!
Religion? Orthodox! Muslim!
What is the big DEAL!
Are you all ashamed of being a Cypriot?
Does the Greek and Turkish LABEL have to remain a mill stone around everyone necks?
Does the EU really care about our past!
Or is it that most don't want to offend their parents and the motherland?
Even thou I think the motherland doesn't give a damn about us!
It's a bit like India/Pakistan/Kashmir!
Why solve it?
Lets destroy it!
Lets have fun!
Lets cause stress!
Lets test our new weapons!
Lets play tug of war!
WITH CYPRUS?
The Ottoman Empire MUST live on!
No the classical Greek Period MUST prevail!
It belongs to Greece because they speak Greek and Aphrodite was a Greek! It was our for 1000 years!
It belongs to Turkey! We won it in a war and some of the people speak Turkish! But it was ours for 800years!
We can go on and on and on like a broken record!
BUT IN THE END?
It boils down to MOST are ashamed or scared to say they are Cypriots! And they can't cut the umbilici cord from the past!
How sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The EU has given US an identity yet we want someone Else's identity!
Why do this?
Why not just jump on a plane and go back to whom you really ARE trying to be why punish those who want to break free and grab the bull by the Horns and start a new life with a better future for our children!
As one identity but with several languages and religions like every other NORMAL civilized country in the EU!
cheers |

Q1: Yes
Q2: Y
Q3: ?
Q4: lost you
Q5: totally lost you
Q6: again
Q7: EU sais that we are crazy
Q8: Cypriot
Q9: Because EU is not yet properly established and individual countries are concerned first about their own interest and second for the broader community.
Q10: Cyprus!
Q11: Language: Greek, Turkish, English
Q12: Religion: whatever (Islam, Christianity the main ones)
Q13: I am not ashamed of being Cypriot
Q14: No
Q15: Yes EU cares
Q16: No, nothing to do with motherlands
Q17: They do at a lesser degree now than 50 years ago
Q18: Very like India/pakistan/kashmir
Q19: Human rights
Q20: It is already partly destroyed
Q21: We r having fun but there is room for progress and justice
Q22: your joking
Q23: again
Q24: and again
Q25: not Cyprus again, choose another country
Q26: They wish
Q27: let's get over it
Q28: It belongs to the people not to Greece
Q29: neither to Turkey
Q30: Exactly, that is why we need the right of self-determination
Q31: at the end what?
Q32: I am Anthoupolitis, Lefkosiatis, Kypreos, Ellinas, Europeos (or maybe just peos), citizen of the world
Q33:I don't think is sad, I think you are missing a point.
Q34 -37: The point is that yes we are Cypriots in nationality not in ethnicity. As individuals we have a different sense of belongingness and this should be recognised by any civilised country. It is a human right and the obligation of Republic of Cyprus to respect the existance of all ethnic communities on the island. No-one should ignore the past because the past is our lives, is our knowledge, is our source of existance. Our past develops who we are, striving for a better tomorrow.
No I am not ashamed, but if I say I am Cypriot and only Cypriot, I will be lying.
lets see what others have to say |

It's gonna take a while before EVERYONE shakes off the "mother" country need/support among Greek Cypriots. I remember a time when seeing a Cypriot flag was as rare as seeing the Tasmanian Tiger!
Just give it more time...

Londrezos, Cypriot, Turkish, European, citizen of the world.

| If someone asks me about my ethnic origin I reply by saying that I am Cypriot. However, in 9 cases out of 10 it is then assumed that I am a Greek speaking Cypriot. I have also found that if I say I am Turkish speaking it is also assumed I am Turkish so either way I have to spend 10 mins explaining the differences - but to me it's 10 mins well spent. People need to be more aware of our diversity. |

Tell me! - when I am being asked where I am from and I say Germany - there are still loads of people who ask East or West ?
....and I do not mean those that are not aware of the fact that the country has been re-united |

City good point:
I am 100% certain IF there was no Turkish Invasion and the Republic of Cyprus was an honest a fair one: Cyprus would of been part of the Common Market/EU back in 1978 and there fore we all would have been one UNITED race and most would of forgotten the Greek/Turkish Past BUT we are to BLAME!
Why?
Simple!
We are the ones who put Greece and Turkey first and Cyprus LAST!
I will tell you a DP story again!
I met a few Greek at a party once and they asked me what I was:
I said Greek:
And they said where from?
I said Cyprus!
There answer was:
Your not Greek!
Your Cypriot!
amazing!
Then again I met other Greeks and they asked me what I was and I said Cypriot and they said ARE YOU ASHAMED TO SAY YOU ARE GREEK!!!!!!!!!!!
I said I AM if I was one!
cheers
PS I have an Uncle WHO has been in Australia for over 50 years and he said I am Cypriot and will never give my origins away to anyone!
Now he is 65 years old and can not get the Australian pension and the benefits and the Cypriot government said to him:
You have been missing overseas since you where 10 years old you are NOT Cypriot you are Australian! |

Nobody is ashamed of being Cypriot but you cannot ignore the fact that there are 2 culturally very close yet distinct communities on the island with different languages and religion who consider themselves Turkish/Greek before being Cypriot. You cannot also ignore that we haven't achieved a unifying Cypriot nation in the same sense that Americans, British, etc. did.
I don't want to get into a discussion about why this happened and if this is right or wrong. I'm simply stating the obvious to answer your question. |

I agree with Mete, and that is the point I was trying to make.
As for what I say if I am asked about country / nationality etc. Actually it depends what they ask me.
In Australia due to my accent I always get the question "what nationality are you?" and I answer Greek, then they often ask me "what part of Greece?" and I say "actually from Cyprus, I am Greek Cypriot"
Other times they ask me "where are you from?" and I say "from Cyprus", before Pagdatis played so well at the aus open I had to explain further, but now 'no problem'. |

Yes, but the reason is for the reasons you described, because nobody says they are Cypriot! This also has much to do with the presence or shall I say intimidation tactics of Greek and Turkish nationalists on the island. |

what is interesting here, is that we are talking in english. If we were to talk turkish or greek, we wouldnt say
'im greek' in greek, or 'im turkish' in turkish, myself at least, when asked what i am in greek, i say 'im cypriot'. I would never say 'eimai ellinas(im greek)'
its all discourse theory |
