Baghdatis beats Ljubicic in Zagreb for second career title
Feb. 4, 2007
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
ZAGREB, Croatia -- Marcos Baghdatis won his second career title Sunday by beating defending champion Ivan Ljubicic 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4 at the Zagreb Open.
The second-seeded Cypriot saved four break points in the opening set -- one with an ace and two others with service winners.
In the tiebreaker, Baghdatis took a 5-1 lead, but Ljubicic rallied to close the gap to 5-4.
Ljubicic, who lost in the first round of the Australian Open nine days after winning the Qatar Open, broke Baghdatis in the fifth game and won the second set.
Baghdatis saved another five break points in the final set, including one in the opening game.
After lobbing Ljubicic, Baghdatis hit a backhand that clipped the net on match point to secure the Cypriot's third straight win over Ljubicic.

| Well done Marcos! Ljubicic is a tough opponent so it must have been a fantastic match. Hopefully he keeps his form for the French Open and for Wimbledon... |

Yes well done re Marko.
I was afraid after watching him with Monfils in Aust open that he 'll take some time to come back to his good form. Well I hope he 'll keep it up in the future. |

Well done Marco.
Fortunately we didnt have any silly celebrations and flag waving....I guess Cypriots now, having mastered what the difference is between tennis and skatoullika as well as forehand and backhand, have now learned the difference between the various tournaments....
PS: My next door neighbour (a fanatical Omonia supporter ofcourse) thought that an open tennis championship is one played in open air....... |

| My next door neighbour, who was a fanatical "no" supporter in the referendum, told me that he understood everything, except this 30-40 business ... |

| When I first went to England, as a young teenager, I got interested in cricket. During the summer of 1967, I think, the West Indies were touring England (Gary Sobers and co). I heard on the radio that the tourists won the first Test, and then the second. I thought to myself: when are they going to play the real match? |

For those members who have no idea what the game of skatoullika is:
Skatoullika is a traditional Cypriot game (now played only at easter in Paphos and parts of Limassol mainly).
It's like a prehistoric version of cricket, but instead of whatever is used to play cricket, stones are used. One person, "the skatoullici, or shitter!!!! keeps guard of a pile of flat stones carefully piled upon each other. The rest of the players stand some distance (about 10 metres) away and each holds a stone. The object of the game is to try and knock the pile of stones down by throwing your stone at the pile. If they fail they just stay put at their place. Once someone knocks the pile down however, they all have to rush pick up their stone and run back to their line. If the skatoullici manages to put the stones back into a pile, he can run and touch any of the players before they manage to get back into line. The person cought has to be the new skatoullici!!
I tell you when i was a kid i saw so many heads crack open during this game.... |

Skatoulika is not like cricket, LINGRI is like cricket, skatoulika is more like a prehistoric bowling I think.
ps. skatoulika is also played in Lefkosia
pps. Whoever invented the scoring for tennis 'ishen oreksi', Sorry City, but some things cannot be transated, or even if they are they don't really make sense! |
