A towering statue to Cyprus's first post-independence president, the late Archbishop Makarios, is to be given the chop because it is seen as an eyesore, a church leader was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
The 10-metre (about 30 ft) high bronze statue of the bearded cleric has been a landmark in the Cypriot capital Nicosia for 15 years.
But many locals sneeringly refer to it as the "Big Mak" saying it is too big and ugly, and out of place in the elegant surrounds of the mediaeval city.
"People say it's too big and is an eyesore," Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos, recently appointed head of the island's Greek Orthodox Church, told the Cyprus Mail daily.
The statue will be replaced by a more modest two-metre-high marble likeness. Makarios died in 1977. |

Good!
Cyprus is full of eye sores. When is the tacky flashing flag on the mountain going to be removed? |

Thats a shame, for two reasons
1. its in the archishop palace, so it doesn't really represents his political career but rather his position as an archbiship.
2. Is nice and it is not out of place as whoever supported that.
Besides, imo he is the most honorable Cypriot as far as history goes. He is not a hero but don't forget he was also the founder of the Republic of Cyprus, the one who led the anti-colonial struggle, the longest running president of Cyprus with the extreme majority of the votes. I don't think there will be other Makarioses in the next 100 years! |

| He was the grudging founder of the Republic of Cyprus, the one who led the enosis struggle. And lets not forget Turkish Cypriot's were co-founders of the state, much to the dislike of some of the Greek Cypriot politicians. |

| Ok Khan, I am not denying that Turkish Cypriots were the co-founders of the Republic of Cyprus. Actually by founder of Republic of Cyprus I rather should say he was the one who led the movement against the colonial power that brought independence. |

| I am against statues in any event. But the additional thing with the Makarios statue is that it is far too big, overpowering the magnificent Archbishop's Palace and the area generally. Aesthetically i say it's vulgar.I would say the same even if the statue was one of Ghandi or Jesus himself!! |

I guess it is a matter of opinion, well aesthetically I believe is amazing and it adds character to Nicosia that lucks of monuments anyway.
So Alexios, what do you think of statue of liberty, the statue of Jesus in Rio De Janeiro, you think they should be removed as well?! |

No they should not! Those statues are situated at the right places, they do not overpower another monument adjacent to them, nor do they interfere or look out of place. How would it look, if for example if the statue of Liberty was placed in the middle of Manhattan????
Anyhow, you are right, it's a matter of opinion. I like brunette, curvy Meditterranean women....You probably prefer blonds.. |

| I never thought I would agree and support anything that came out of the new Archbishop. Aesthetically the statue is monstrous and it is completely out of place and phase. |
