French historian Thibaux to become "Atakan Turk"

French historian and writer Jean Michel Thibaux, who announced he was applying for Turkish citizenship following the French Parliament's decision to approve the bill making it a crime to deny Armenian allegations of genocide by the Turks, has had his application approved by the Interior Ministry in Ankara.

Following the initial approval by the Interior Ministry, Thibaux's application has been presented to the Council of Ministers. Following approval by the ministers, Thibaux will reportedly take the Turkish name "Atakan Turk

I wonder if he will forsake his French citizenship and live in some remote eastern part of Turkey to fully experience his newfound Turkish heritage.. NOT!

Whatever, the fellow can do whatever he wants. Should stop visiting holland too often though. Or maybe he found a cheaper source of weed in Turkey.

Or maybe he is trying to following Ataturkian Buddhism " It's good to be a Turk ". hommmmmmmm

In any case, none of his actions help in any way portray why the law can be absurd and instead ridicule him and his credibility as part of intelligenzia.

This news shows how backward Turkish laws are.

Why does anybody need to change their names in order to be Turkish citizen? Shows the extend of nationalism in Turkish society.

For example, last year Turkish Leaguse champions Fenerbahce had applied for Turkish citizenship for one of its Brazilian players. Applications is approved and he took the name of Mehmet. What was wrong with Marco?

Does everybody who becomes Turkish citizen had to get a turkish name?

Mind boggling......

Don't even get me started about Article 301 of the penal code. For example this post of mine would definetly be in danger according to that article, and I would be facing a jail time I guess.

That is just despicable and pathetic. No person should be required to change their name for whatever reason. I find this law a gross violation of human rights, and I hope those affected will apply to the ECHR to demand compensation from the Turkish government. Make them pay several million, and let's see if they will come with such laws again. I just have no words. Sometimes the Turkish government just disgusts me when they come up with all this nationalistic crap.

What a story... facts stranger than fiction. The word monclonal comes to mind with this immigration policy. Xenophobia? What about the secular state? Ataturk would not be proud.
