| Thanks Marina, I'll give Ayios Onoufrios a try next time. Actually Vasillikon winery has oustanding wines, it is my favourite winery in Cyprus. |

| The white wine that is also called Vasilikon is probably both one of the cheapest and on of the best Cypriot white wines - the most realiable one, and usually less than 3 CYP... |

Now WINE is a great topic for discussion!!! OK zivania is still my favourite but we can't all drink a bottle with our food can we??!!
My village is just a couple of miles away from Vasssilikon Winery. The owners are young and progressive and contrary to most wine producers in Cyprus they have actually studied enology.Ayios Ounoufrios is propably the best value for money wine in Cyprus at under CP3!! Note, that often you cannot find it on supermarket shelves so when I do, i buy as many bottles as i can afford.I talked to the owners about it and their answer was that they would rather not produce it if they can't find the right grapes in the right mix and quality. |

My Papou used to go through loads of Zivania, he'd have a shot with each meal, rub it on his face after shaving, put it on a cut or sore, anything and everything.
The man died three months ago, one month before his 95th birthday.
I say always have a bottle handy, cant be a bad thing. |

About Zivania... from those who don't know, zivania is made of 'Zivana' in English the 'must'. The 'must' is the remains of the gapes after crushing, including the seeds and the skins. The 'must' is then distilled to produce the glorious drink of Cyrpiots ZIVANIA.
Zivania is also produced in Greece, called raki, in Italy called Grappa and I guess in other wine producing countries.
An interesting story about Zivania and migration:
The father of a friend of mine came to Australia after holidays in Gyprus. He brought with him a bottle of Zivania and Johny Walker. At the customs the officer stopped him to inspect the bags (from those who are not Australians, in Australia they have stupid custom laws including that passengers are only allowed to bring only one bottle of alcohol)
Anyway the officer after looking in my friend's father bag he found the two bottles of alcohol and he asked my friend's father:
Officer: Are you aware of the custom laws concerning alcohol
Friend's father: Yes
O: Then why did you bring two bottles instead of one or at least declare it.
FF: I didn't bring two bottles of alcohol, what are you talking about?
O: Then, what is this?
FF: A bottle of Johny Walker wisky.
O: And this? (showing the bottle of Zivania)
FF: Aaa, that's MEDICINE!!!
At the end he didn't get away with it, the customs took both bottles. I hope at least the officers enjoyed drinking Zivania, perhaps they would of realised that really it was medicine, hehe |

yeah, but you need to have the one they produce up in the mountain villages, not the one you can buy in any supermarket. The privately produced ones have sometimes like 70 or 80% alcohol
My first encounter with Zivania was after a really huge Meze, some beer, fruits, sweets etc etc, then came the Ouzo and the time we couldn't cope with anymore Ouzo someone said after Ouzo there is only Zivania. So he brought this huge water bottle from the Taverns fridge. We didn't know what it was so we asked and what he did was spill some on a small plate, lit it with a match, dipped his fingers in it and showed it to us - his fingertips still flaming.
Well normally I wouldn't have tried such stuff, but well, there we were tasting our first sip of Zivania.
Over the years I have learned about all the other useful things one can do with it. Drinking it is probably not the most sane one |

Talking about zivania used as 'medicine', My grandparents stayed down for a while recently and I happened to have a sore throat, when I was in bed half asleep my yiayia (Grandmother) came into my room, and started messing around, opening draws and stuff...anyway, I got this huge whiff of Zivania, the next thing I know my yiayia is making me sit up in bed so can can put a zivania soaked handkerchief around my neck, I had to sleep with it on all night, I'm surprised I wasn't' drunk on the fumes by the morning, they were pretty strong....
Another story involving the same yiayia, is when she came to stay down a few years ago, she decided she was going to clear the store room out, as you do , when this ladder fell on her leg, she ended up fracturing her bone, but she insisted that she didn't need to go the hospital but that all she needed was to rub on some zivania (even though her leg was HUGE!), oh and that we shouldn't' tell papou (Grandad) because he'd just worry....(Apparently he wouldn't notice if we didn't tell him..)..
Great women....
PS, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Marinna, your papou sounded like a great man...
