Ethnikara OLE, hope Greece wins as well
Does anyone know if in the case that Cyprus comes 3rd, does it have any chance to qualify or it is just the first two in that qualify for Euro. |

It was a night of both fury and joy for me.
The Fury
I picked up 2 T/C friends who preferred to watch the game instead of whatever fireworks took place in the North last night and together with my son and two friends of his, squeezed into my car and headed towards the GSP stadium. We arrived there at about quarter past 8,well before cick off time (9 o'clock). Note that the published ticket prices were CP12 for adults and 0.50 cents for kids. So i had with me about CP50. We arrive, to find out that out of the 12 or so ticket boxes that the GSP has, only 3 were open!!!! Apparently the officials of the stadium, in their wisdom did not expect a great turnover. So i patiently took my place in line together with about 300 other people to buy the tickets. Minute by minute hundreds more were arriving as kick off time approached dangerously. So at about quarter to 9 i found myself crashed between atleast 1.000 other fools like myself all screaming their heads of, waving hands and throwing all sorts of insults and threats at the officials, the poor ticket issuers and each other!!!! What do we find out next?? They run out of tickets and were waiting for some to be printed on the spot!!!!!! Anyhow at about 20 minutes past 9, the Germans having scored their goal, i finally manage to squeeze through to the ticket box, only to be told that because of the situation only adult tickets were available!!!!! I told the man look, i only have enough money for 3 adults and 3 children, i ve been standing in line for more than an hour and i am not leaving until you give me 3 adult tickets and 3 children ones!!!!!!!! Sorry Sir he said ,i cannot!!!!. But i can give you 6 cheaper tickets at CP7 each for the horseshoe stands. What could i do??!!! The game was well into the first half, my son was calling me on the mobile every five minutes to hurry up and my T/C friends were probably thinking they should have opted to watch the fireworks instead...So i compromised and bought the bloody tickets....Good old Cypriot efficiency...
The Joy
We got into the stadium at about half past 9.It was almost full, the german funs in their colourful red black and yellow flags, hats, scarves etc occupying almost the entire east stand, making a hell of an atmosphere being a goal up...I sensed some dissappointment in the Cypriot funs around us who started to believe a real thrashing was imminent..Not so..!!! The Cypriot players must have noticed i entered the stadium and the game gradually began to turn around:wink: One or two great runs by the 2 wingers Okkas and Aloneftis down the flanks and the Germans suddenly began to look like an ordinary team. Not enough time however..the first half ended but i felt a great game was set for the second period. I was not wrong. Throughout the second half, but for the outfit and the 2-3 blond heads one would not notice who were the Germans and who the Cypriots. Okkas and Aloneftis really turned the skill on and Charalambides in the middle made Ballack look like a Hartlepool Town reserve..!! The Germans got quiter by the second and the Cypriot funs started to believe something good was really possible. So when on the 53rd minute Okkas drove a fierce shot past the German keeper all hell broke lose!!!! It didnt stop there. Cyprus continued to push forward with real gusto and a second goal was dissallowed, wrongly in my opinion for offside!! The funs were going crazy and and the atmoshpere was electrifying. About 10 minutes before full time as the less fit Cypriots began to tire, the Germans sieged our area but Cyprus hung on.As the final wistle blew, the Germans burried their heads in and the white players jumped up and down like kids. It was a great sporting moment for Cyprus...
PS: It was the second time in a row that Cyprus appeared in the Cyprus flag colours of white with a bit of yellow and green here and there. The first time was the win over Ireland...Lets hope the outfit remains and accoppanied by good results.... |
