Quote:

Doğu Ergil

Despite the rhetoric that claims a person's style of dress is a matter of freedom, I believe that, on the whole, there is a man with a covered brain and soul behind every covered woman. But then it may be argued that, although they are very few, some independent women, who are independent either because of their frame of mind or because of social-economic privileges, cover up too. That is true; but what about group pressure and the stringent socialization they have undergone since childhood when pre-modern values were internalized -- values that are sustained by the group they still live amongst? How many fully covered Muslim women can we find living alone with economic and social independence outside a conservative Muslim community in a modern part of the world? Let us say my assumption about group pressure is wrong. Allow me to point out a few recent examples as proof of how men prey on the status of women status as well as their flesh because they afford them no individuality.

I was just insinuating that you occasionally enjoy a tipple of our fine Cypriot spirit, Zivania, and that maybe the village's official 'peeping Tom', also enjoyed the same tipple....being from the same neck of the woods.... Wink Very Happy

I've heard a few people say, that the full head scarf is simply a for men to control women, but I've also heard some Muslim women who wear the full head scarf say that is was their absolute choice, not their husbands and brothers, and that actually it gives them control.... Honestly, I think it might be a mixture of both...

There was talk from one newspaper in England, of actually banning the full head scarf, but I believe that, if England is a truly democratic country, it should allow Muslim women to wear whatever they want, some women feel very strongly that it is a part of their religion, and not allowing them to wear it is surely not allowing them all of their religious rights, as British Citizens?
