I believe I saw in the news that both the fanatics and the rest of the Islamists' expressed their democratic right to free speech. |

Another day, another "look how Muslims are reacting" media report. Why does the media blow these things up ten fold? Its like they want to see Muslim enflamed. If the media didnt splash it all over the place, then i think most Muslims wouldnt give a toss what Jack Straw thought. Instead they invite Hijab wearing women onto the news and provoke them, they interview people on the streets and ask them stupid questions like "What do you think of Jack telling you uncover yourself" etc etc.
And then people like you sophisticated beggar, believing that Muslims really have nothing better to than complain all day, come and fuel the idea that Muslims dont allow free speech, when in reality, 99% of Muslims are going about their daily lives earning a living. Not, as the media would make you believe, shouting and setting fire to things all day.
It seems you cant go one day without the media waiting for a provocation, and to fuel the subsequent reaction. |

Jack Straw, former foreign minister, current leader of the Commons, wrote an article in a paper saying Muslim women who cover themselves completely promote division in Britian, and that he would rather they take them off.
No doubt, the media pounced on this and it made headline news everywhere. Yesterday a Muslim woman had a her veil torn off her by a guy shouting racist abuse. This is what the media does, promote hysteria among people. |

Yes' and to add to Khans' post he made it quite clear that he wanted to open healthy discussions on this subject, deliberately. We have to discuss these issues but the media will not give the other side of the story.
In a book I love very much, "Birds without wings", the veil is mentioned to have begun not as a religious thing but to cover up beauty. A women from circassian decent was causing trouble in a village with her beauty and decided to cover herself up. This made the other women think of themselves as ordinary and so covered up too to make the same statement. |

Actually hijab is the one where you can show your face, what he is on about is the full veil, and only a small percentage of the worlds Muslim women wear the full veil (i.e. with the small slit for the eyes). The Koran simply says a women has to dress modestly and cover herself, it does not to the best of my knowledge, tell them to cloak their entire body.
But if the veil divides society, then what about those Orthodox Jews in Stamford Hill? Their beards and Orthodox dress dont exactly intergrate into society either does it? |

Indeed ... never in the field of human endeavour have so many had so many to speak for them!
(That speech being unwanted, on the most part). |

They are probably the most segregated people in the country. Even the rest of the non-Orthodox Jews hate them. Of course there is a cultural difference as well because they are from Russia and seem to have been trapped in time. |

The only even remotely amusing thing about that was the assertion that it was Jack Straw's fault (!!) |

In this case then...I dont think the hijab should be worn is schools that like to uphold a school uniform. The main point of a school uniform is to form obediance and unity with a school. If the hijab isnt necessary in the muslim faith I think its wrong for people to complain about schools not allowing it. The same goes with other religions who might do the same. |

In your inimitable style ... but (with some difficulty) I tracked down what Jack Straw actually wrote.
As usual, it is infinitely more subtly written than the simplifications and misrepresentations put around by the (other) newspapers!
I understand entirely where he is coming from, having been obliged once to interview someone wearing sunglasses ... in the middle of winter. I confess I didn't have the nerve to ask him to take them off as they could have been worn for medical reasons, for example. |
