If the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not a recognised country how come the biggest mobile phone company in the world has just bought Telsim ?
who's next ?
Could this be a start of Recognition? |

Vodaphone wanted Telsim (in Turkey) which they bought. It was a contractual obligation of this sale of Telsim (in Turkey) to Vodaphone that they also subsequently bought Telsim's operations in Cyprus and continued to run them. The recent press reports are on the completion of this obligation of Vodaphones. It's not really an indication of any formal recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by vodaphone imo. It's just a result of Telsim making sure that after a sale of Telsim Turkey operations would continue in North Cyprus. |

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has not issued or authorised an international telephone code for the TRNCy. Instead Turkey ( +90 ) has granted a local code to the TRNCy ( +90 392 ). This fact itself says at what stage the TRNCy is in regards to recognition on the telecommunications level.
Likewise, the International Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has not issued or authorised a top level domain name for the TRNCy. Instead Turkey ( .tr ) has granted a second level domain name to the TRNCy ( .nc.tr ).
Vodaphone buying a Turkish telecom company which is involved in illegal operations in northern Cyprus is somewhat problematic, but being a pragmatist there is nothing much that can or even ought to be done about it.
Good for Vodaphone.. maybe you get cooperation with CYTAmobile |

That is obvious. It is also obvious that by saying what I will say some may very well brand me with various epithets, however since you asked, I will take that chance with you ....
Neither Telsim nor vodaphone have applied to and subsequently succesfuly been accepted by the appropriate institution of the Republic of Cyprus, which holds sole legal authority over the entire island ( the sticking point ), to provide telecommunication services in the Republic of Cyprus, which is defined by its internationally ( apart from Turkey, yet another sticking point ) accepted boundaries and holds sole jurisdiction within to provide such licenses and regulate such services.
Basically, neither Telsim nor vodaphone have the legal permit and 'papers' to operate. But since the Republic of Cyprus has no effective power or control over the occupied areas, where the self declared TRNCy has established itself, from a pragmatic point of view there is little that can be done about it. And why not much ought to be done about it? Because honestly I am not keen in supporting a notion that denies the vast majority of the T/C community from telecom services.
Hope that sorted things. |
