Sorry I just wanted to rant as some friends are no longer coming to our wedding in Cyprus because of the middle eastern troubles - they've cancelled their holiday and said they don't want to take their child to a country where there are refugees roaming around - it isn't safe!!!

Couldn't even call us first to check (say they've been watching the news but must've been watching the news for another planet!) - our family live out there and we just can't get over the stupidity of it all...

Rant over...!

Well there were a few thousand extra EU and american citizens around - apart from the normal tens of thousands of tourists from the same countries...

PS. These refugees have all now moved on to the UK, so they'd better worry about the safety there now...

They're British citizens being taken to the army base and taken home. Same thing happened to my parents in law during 1974 and they couldn't go back to their village.

They are being stupid aren't they???

Hi KLB, I'm very sorry to hear that.
However, (please don't take that as being impolite) if your guests cancelling their attendance in your wedding without consulting you and asking about the facts then they can't have much interest in you or your future destiny.

btw, it has always been the case that the number of tourists in Cyprus was decreasing when there was trouble in the mideast. So this is nothing new Sad

I'm sure if there were any danger our family there would've said something so why he didn't check with us first is beyond me...

We certainly won't - I find it all very sad indeed, as an English girl I've never really grown up surrounded by conflict so it does make me sad.

I just can't believe he says he watches the news but he clearly doesn't! I've been checking with my father in law who's very up on the middle eastern crisis...

So I can definitely tell him he's being a stupid idiot then? Oh well, all the more sheftalia for me...

As a matter of fact, the Lebanese that make their way to Cyprus are quite rich. This was so in 1982 when the same situation arose as a result of Israel's aggression then. The economy of Cyprus in 1982 boomed, literally. Foreign nationals that use Cyprus as transit are also well off. The poor normally stay behind, as always. Thus, I tend to agree with Leyla that probably the Lebanon war gave them a perfect excuse to ... boycott your finest moment.

Have an idea. Why don't you invite all forum members?

Well I'm sure that we're related somehow through my husband to be's Cypriot family anyway! All you Cypriots seem to know each other or are related somehow (not like us English who's families don't even talk to each other!)

I don't mind if you turn up - it's only a little wedding anyway so the more the merrier...only 8 weeks until we leave for Cyprus now.

My mother in law's family are from Xylotymbou - not sure about father in law but I think still Larnaca. Most of them still live in Xylotymbou too although a few scattered further out! They came over in 1950s I think and have been here in UK ever since.

I know there's a cousin of a cousin who works at the hotel we're getting married in....
