first of all i must say how wonderful i have found this section to be. much more useful then debating in circles :)

so im d/l an MP4 file and its said to be a video. just wondering if i iwll need a special player to watch the file. also the file is only about 200MB (as opposed to the equivalent 800MB of the non MP4 files). Does this mean its incomplete or are MP4s supposed to be smaller (like MP3 and WAVs)

thanks again!

You will. The two main packages that will do it - and loads of other formats as well - are QuickTime and VLC. I recommend the second because it spreads fewer files across the hard disk than the first.

MP4 is a relatively new format and the compression algorithm is better than older video formats, so that 200MB might well be right!

I am not entirely sure about this and am always cautious about not agreeing with Alistair ;)

but I think mp4 is more like a standard 'container' for video files which can be encoded using a range of codec's (coder / decoder) and not actually a codec itself.

DivX and Xvid are a couple of the most common and newer codecs (both of which can be used in the mp4 container) - giving excellent quality and compression.

PS Giorgio - I have over 1/2 a tetrabyte of hard drive storage in my main machine here Smile

Basically my main PC is connected to my telly and visa versa, so I no longer use 'video tape'. All my collection of videos etc are stored on my PC as data files and I record from TV onto my PC. This takes alot of storage but storage is cheap these days and getting cheaper every day.

I have to agree with Erolz MP4 has been around for years with the difference that it had the extension of avi and encoded with codecs the most popular one being DivX.

By the way Thrill how long was the video and how good the quality was?

The video is about 1.5hrs and the quality is as good as can be (it is a bootlegged copy of "The 40 Year Old Virgin" a movie that just came out to cinemas 10 days ago here). The same quality for another movie I d/l wiht 700MB basically.

ALso the size isnt about taking up space. It's about the time it requires to be downloaded. And also my uni doesn't allow me to d/l more than 3.5Gigs in 2 hours and no more than 10Gigs in 24 hours. I already got a first warning for violating the former Sad . I'm more and I'm off the network.
