Quote:
The many thousands of extra people flooding into Cyprus because of the Lebanon crisis are putting a strain on the Mediterranean island's infrastructure, the government has warned - and it could be reaching "maximum capacity".

Temporary accommodation at the fairground in Nicosia
Makeshift accommodation is being made available to new arrivals

Cypriot authorities estimate that more than 20,000 people fleeing Lebanon have arrived on the island in less than a week, and say the numbers could swell to anything up to 100,000.

"Our set-up is functioning 24 hours a day - we have people on location and are using all the facilities at ports and airports, other facilities in hotels, in apartments, even in restaurants to receive people for a few hours," Foreign Minister George Lillikas said.

"The problem is that this is peak season, end of July, and the hotels they have very high capacity already, and buses also, and the capacity at ports and airports is difficult."

It seems that the Cyprob is too important to overcome even for humanitarian reasons. In the north we have at least two airports that are being under utilised

In this "civilised" day and age the question must remain WHY?

The comment was a Sarcastic one , sorry i should have made it a bit more clear Embarassed Embarassed

NO my friend i was not implying that at all and the embarrased faces were aimed at the TPAP gov for trying to demand money from the people to leave cyprus onboard charterd flight's.
I hope that Turkey shows the rest of the world how you should treat people in their time of need not like the TPAP Gov

Sorry my friend for the misunderstanding. I hope as well that Turkey will be an example of how to tackle such issues with dignity and pride. Time will tell.

I read somewhere today (will try to find it again) that Turkey has allowed people into Turkey without their passports just to cut through the red tape and expedite the repatriation of the refugees to their respective countries. Nice start I think.

I can tell you that I heard the same stories on SHOW TV (via Sattelite). I also heard /saw a part of the speech that Erdogan made to the Turkish Cypriot during his visit. The synopsis is that Turkey, in no uncertain terms, will never abondon the Turkish Cypriot cause and that we will be patient. Moreover, he said that history will never forgive the ones responsible for the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots.
