Looking at some pages about this, I just discovered that the song (one of my favourites) "Shine on you crazy diamond" was actually written for Barrett. I did not know that!

RIP Barrett, even though I only know post-1970 period PF. I am just trying to think, is there any band around of their caliber or at least promising enough to reach what PF reached at? I just can't see any....

Yes Moon, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was written for him and remains my favorite Pink Floyd tune. For the record, I do not see any band surpassing the achievements of PF not now nor in the future. The art of playing rock instruments is a dying art. The youth of today is into electronically generated sounds that are looped. This is something you do not require a talent for. Only simple electronics. Sad but true.

Exactly, and this is why I'm sure that none of todays bands will be still known in lets say 10 years time or so.

Probably only those ones that are 'oldies' Wink now already, as Pink Floyd, Stones, Led Zeppelin and few 'younger' ones like U2 or Depeche Mode and we are talking only about bands here not single artists...

Yeah I agree City. The bands you mention are legends and were a big part of my life as I was growing up and I still listen to their CDs on a daily basis. Pink Floyd's cds "Wish You Were Here" and "Darkside of The Moon" are practically welded into my CD changer in my car. Cool

Another thing I agree with you on is that you are correct in saying that the performers of taday or ten years ago do not occupy any part of my memory. Laughing

so true. thats one of the reasons , i enjoy more and more traditional and jazz music. they still use real instruments and leave space for improvisation.

Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad for PF

(even though it is clear what RIP means , what does it actually stands for ? )

I used to pass the partially-boarded-up house in which he lived every day when I was working in Cambridge. It was a tourist attraction - coach parties turned up to stare Surprised
