I am not sure if people want or will use such a facility but I have implemented a 'voice chat' system that talkcyprus.org members can use.

What is a 'vocie chat' system.

Basically it allows users to meet togeather and talk to each other live - not type but talk.

What do I need to be able to 'voice chat'

Basically you will need 3 things.

1 - You will need some kid of audio input device (microphone)

2 - Some kind of audio output device (speakers or headphones).

3 - Some client software that you download and instal on your computer. The system I have chosen (for various reasons) is called teamspeak 2. Thus you will need to download and install the teamspeak 2 client software whihc is free and can be found here. Remeber you need the CLIENT software NOTthe SERVER software

http://www.goteamspeak.com/index.php?page=downloads

The best input / output device for this kind of thing is actualy a headseat with built in microphone. Using speakers with a seperaste microphone can lead to nasty 'feedback' if things are not set up carefully. As someones 'speach' comes out of the speakers it enters your microphone and comes back round out of the speakers etc etc etc. The best way to avoid this issue is to use a mic/headphone device. Another way to minimise the problems with external speakers and seperate microphone is to ensure that your 'settings' -> 'sound input/output settings' on your teamspeak client are set to 'push to talk' (and not voice activated). This requires you to push a keyboard key when you want to talk but stops anything being transmitted by your microphone if you are not 'pushing tio talk'

So how do I use the system once I have downloaded and installed the teamspeak client?

Basically once you have installed the teamspeak client all you need to do is be logged into the forum and goto the forum portal page. At the bottom right there is a section under the heading 'Voice Chat'. This shows the differnt 'chat rooms' (at the moment there is a single chat room called 'General chat area') and shows any users currently in the chat room. Click on the room name you wish to enter (in this case 'General chat area'). This will start up your teamspeak client and log you into the chat room using your forum username as the chatroom username. Chat away (remembering to 'push to talk' if you have set that option). To exit the chat room close the Teamspeak2 client.

Happy chatting Smile

I set it up, started testing it, wondered why it didn't work ... then found that my new Dell laptop doesn't have a built-in microphone Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

Still, well done on choosing a cross-platform client. When my Mac PowerBook comes back from its holidays (don't ask) I'll use it. By some trick or other Apple has managed to eliminate cross-talk from the internal microphone, something I have never come across elsewhere.

Seems to work ok here. Funny though that the application, once launched, does not show in the taskbar, but can be found when using Alt+Tab.... Confused

I think it shows in taskbar if you minimse it, otherwise it juts 'lurks' behind any other windows you have open - I think.
