I'm sure this one is going to raise a large number of objections... from the description of the show I have to say it sounds quite objectionable to me...

Quote:
Property Developing Abroad

Time: 20.00 - 21.00 Tuesday, 30th May on five

Northern Cyprus

Gary McCausland helps ten Brits who are looking to invest in property abroad, finding the right home for improvement. This week Jane and Carl Berry from Nottingham buy an abandoned Rolling Eyes property in Northern Cyprus and give themselves just ten weeks to increase its value by over 20,000 pounds.

Is it just me or does this sound like exploitation by these people? I'm going to watch and see what the show says about the situation in Northern Cyprus. If it promotes it as a goldmine, I think a complaint to Ofcom might be in order.

This is a general trend - at Olympia and ExCeL there are "buy a second home in Z" events almost every week. The latest is Z = Bulgaria, it would seem from adverts on the Tube.

Mind you, 47 minutes (1 hour minus the adverts) is a fraction of the time that would be needed to explain all the complexities of the situation ...

It would not surprise me if they pointed Channel 5 to the ongoing case of the Orams. If they return a outcome in in Turkish Cypriots favour, there may no longer be a legal burden for these programme makers.

Still, you would assume Property Development would assume purchasing the property from the legal owners...

The Oram's case is not about if it is legal to purchase a property from someone that does not own it - that will not be legal even in the UK... The case is about if a ruling (any ruling) in another EU state can be re-inforced in the UK - especially if the EU state itself is not able to re-inforce it on its own territory.

The thing is pg, the British foreign office does not explicity tell British people not to buy - just that they seek legal advice and accept possible consequences, i am guessing a fall out from the Orams case is one possible consequence Channel 5 does not want a part of. They dont want people who bought because of this programme to sue Channel 5 if they find themselves prosecuted in the UK. But i am just guessing anyway, it is probably the case that Greek Cypriot's came down on them like a ton of bricks to remove the programme, like they did with the Tfl adverts.

If they were gona be selling Greek Cypriot property, then it should not have been shown, if tiwas Turkish Cypriot property, then whatever, sell it like any othjer country, however, in the north they must be explicitn insaying that there are disputed land ownerships, and people should be wary. its goodthey removed the program,me, from the description, it seemed they were selling Greek Cypriots land.

I saw it, plenty of guarded mentions of the dangers of property speculation in Northern Cyprus, but followed up quickly on each occasion with the qualifier that any property investment carries risks and, to quote Del Boy... "he who dares wins"...

An interesting programme, but I can imagine it would have been deeply offensive to the families whose abandoned property was being used simply to make money by callous foreign speculators.
