IT’S THE beginning of the tourist season. There’s a smattering of tourists sunbathing on Phinikoudes beach even though the afternoon breeze is chilly.
Along the restaurants’ side of the promenade, waiters tout for business in near empty cafeterias and builders are working on a half-finished construction.
But what really catches the eye are the huge banners hanging from a couple of buildings offering residential apartments for sale. Perhaps that doesn’t appear to be anything unusual except that these particular buildings used to be tourist apartments.
Larnaca tourism is in trouble and has been for some time. Hotels and apartment blocks are either closing or converting their buildings into residential properties.
Twenty years ago Larnaca was a quaint little town with a beautiful old fashioned promenade that had stood intact for centuries. |

For sure quality is lacking....
However, I think that this year the government has more or less forced with worst 'hotels' and tourist apartments to shape up or shut down..., and I think many of those or now converted to residential blocks instead - not only in Larnaca but all over.
Most likely it will improve quality. |

definately brings back to 'local' quality, in the sense that ow the local people can live by the beach, and bring a bit of life to the place all year round (which it probably is anyway, but u know what i mean)
what pissed me off most about the finikoudhes, are those god-awful idiots who drive round the block and down the beach road about 10 times a night, so they can 'show off' absoulte w*nkers |

this 'driving around the block and showing off' is very fashionable in the arab countries as well Have seen it happening in Damaskus and Beirut...
I must say I still love Larnaca. Imo its the perfect mixture of locals, ex-pats and tourists. Its unfortunately true that it has gone down in recent years. It became more tourist-orientated but with no success.
I think for living its a good place - good places to eat, for shopping or going out, but if one comes as a tourist I doubt that one would choose it a second time. The only good hotels are down Dhekelia Road, the cheaper ones in town are either only apartments or have been closed or converted into resident homes (Sea Gate, Four Lanterns and also the one that burned down a few years ago). I think the only one left is the Flamingo and that has the planes nearly flying through. |

I live in Larnaka and I've noticed this trend happen over 10 years, it's not new and only reflects the natural evolution from a quiet picturesque town to a fully flegded city which doesn't need tourism.
The truth is, why own a hotel and operate on a seasonal basis with massive drops in demand during disasters (see: 9/11, Anthrax, Iraq, Bird Flu and SARS)? What for? Especially since you can sell luxury flats at £280,000 each like Four Lanterns did.
Also, why doesn't anyone think of us locals? I HATE MEZZE!!! Many people in Larnaka are modern refined individuals who don't drool over the thought of a Mezze, or Cypriot dishes, which we eat at home anyway. They would rather eat at a steak house or chineese, which would explain the decline in traditional restaurants and tavernas. |

Oh I remember those days....hehehe!! I loved playing on the games..those were the days... Starbucks is the Big thing now!! You get a shot of coffee and then jump in your car and have a few drag races......
I've never really seen Larnaca as being that Touristy to be honest with you, it always has more 'locals' than tourists....
About the food, the young do tend to want to go to a trendy Chinese, or Mexican restaurant rather than a traditional taverna, that's usually reserved for family outings on a Sunday.....
I still Love the finigoudes!! It appeals to all age groups! However I did find a really old pic of them (the finigoudes) and found that a few really nice old buildings were knocked down....

I remember when the Finikoudes just had shops full of arcade games.
My parents would dump me and my cousin there for hours with a load of change so while they were off enjoying a drink, we were trying to clock Double Dragon, Kung Fu Master or Golden Axe. |
