Speaking to the Cyprus Mail from Doha, Kasoulides said: “I have no idea who chose it as our national dish or why, but what I will say is that we cannot claim it exclusively as our own.
“I feel that its origin is not important and what we should do is look at things that unite Greek and Turkish Cypriots and that they can share. Baklava is one of these things that our two communities share between us through our common heritage.” |

I like that quote, very true...... I don't know where pakalva (very tasty in my opinion!) comes from, but I do know a lot of countries have it, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Lebannon, Syria, Egypt etc....lets just say it's something we share! About the education, it's true what Dhavlos say's, in the past people haven't really differeciated (don't think i've spelt that right, my spelling's awful!!) between Turks and Turkish Cypriot, when I was younger there was a lot of resentment of the "tukrs" because of the invasion, not that they hated every single Turk, but what the Turkish army did, and are still doing.....Alot of what the Greek Cypriot youths know about the Cyprus problem is, Tukey invaded Cyprus, Turkish troops in Cyprus, "we want them out.." I'm lucky I suppose I haven't come across any racist Greek Cypriot's, their are ppl who say, "i mistrust the Turks", but then they'll say, "Oh but not the Turkish Cypriot's". At me Greek school we were never really told about the Cyprus prob, apart from "the Turks invaded", neither in church, although they do make you sit and listen to really long letters from some bishop or other, about some saint.......hehe
LOL, and there's me thinkin this was a post about paklava!! |
