Turk sweet makers claim just desserts in Cyprus row
Sunday, May 14, 2006
Thomas Grove

ISTANBUL - Reuters
Turkey's baklava makers are up in arms over European Union posters presenting their sweet, sticky dessert as the national dish of Greek Cyprus.

"Baklava is definitely more Turkish than Cypriot," Halil Dinçerler, owner of Haci Sayid baklava makers, told Reuters.

The "baklava battle" is the latest irritant in relations between EU-member Greek Cypriots and EU-candidate Turkey, which hopes to become the EU's first predominantly Muslim state.

Austria, holding the EU presidency, served up the culinary clanger earlier this week in a poster for Europe Day showcasing sweets from EU members.

An organizer for the Austrian presidency said the posters had been distributed before anyone noticed the offending dessert and noted a change in orders at some events marking Europe Day.

"Cyprus has other sweets so we served ladies fingers," he said, referring to a fried sweet dipped in syrup.

An aide to Turkey's EU chief negotiator Ali Babacan has promised to raise the baklava dispute at EU headquarters in Brussels, Turkish newspaper Hürriyet said.

I say, Baklava is Cypriot in as much as northern Cyprus is Turkish!

Get out of Cyprus, and return our stolen homeland, and you can have your Baklava and eat it alone as well! Its all yours to enjoy it alone! After all, we do not like its taste that much!

Then we will patiently wait by the corner, until the right moment comes to kick them out in the same way they came here. We have a history of 3,500 years of waiting patiently, and we have always managed to survive and emerge victorious. They will eventually get out, in the same way that so many others have been compelled to do so in the past. Everybody else came and left, but we managed to remain here, in the whole of Cyprus. We know how to wait. It is in our genes.

Dude you have never managed to kick no one out, you just waited for the next conqueror to take over and hope they are better than the last and finally when you was given your independence that barely lasted as you was conquered again, so the only thing you are waiting for seems like the day you die of old age a bitter and twisted man but that said at least you have baklava to eat while you wait.......would you like a turkish coffee to go with that baklava????

This is only what your twisted history books have taught you to believe. We have also managed to kick some of them out. Nevertheless, in view of our population size, I am quite content that we did way better than most others. Cyprus will always remain Cypriot, and will never become Turkish, like it never became Egyptian, Persian, Assyrian, Arabic, Frankish, Venetian, British, etc, etc. The important thing here is that it will never become Turkish, and not who will -again temporarily, be the next conqueror. This is what we teach our children to have in mind, and also that patience is a virtue that will always allow them to prevail, and that they should always have our long history as an example that proves it.

It depends what you mean when you say it has never been Greek, and that it will never be Greek. Do you mean it was never part of Greece, and that it will never be part of Greece? If this is what you mean, then you are right, nevertheless this has nothing to do with what we G/Cs have in our minds and /or plans. I did not say that Cyprus is Greek or that it has to become Greek. I only said that Cyprus is Cypriot and will remain Cypriot. However, in the same way that it has never been Greek and it will never become Greek, it has also never been Turkish and will never become Turkish! Most likely you missed to understand that what we strive for is how not to allow Cyprus to become Turkish, and not how to make it Greek.

You conveniently forget that it is not Greece that occupies part of Cyprus illegally, and also that it is not the one falsely claiming, every day, to have rights in Cyprus, but Turkey instead!

Your country has no rights in Cyprus, and it will never have, as long as at least one of us remains alive!

if you saw the film "politiki kouzina" you remind me of the couple starting a fight over cinnammon and ending up having historical fights... to be honest the end was swearing at each other in turkish but i dont want to give you guys any ideas Laughing Laughing

My country the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has every right in Cyprus and my big brother Turkey keeps violent, backward and nationalistic people like you at bay like a farmer's shot gun does a wild dog who suffers from rabies.

I am cypriot who loves and respects every part of its history, you kifeas are a cypriot that hates every part of its Turkish history that is 500 years in the making, accept it at long last and then a great weight will be lifted off your shoulders or stick with the spite filled hate orientated nationalistic stance of the Greeks you seem to like holding on that 10 foot pedistal of yours and you will never achieve nothing.

On Saturday evening i had a very nationalistic Greek argue with me at my local takeaway when he decided to just get involved in my conversation with the owner about EU membership and stated that US bloody TURKS should get out of Cyprus and it is a Greek island, despite my over an hour of consistant fact and reasonable debate with him it was like trying to get water from a stone, he was adament about his racist idea's and at one point (this was really hard to believe) but he said that there was no such thing as a Turkish Cypriot but occupiers from Turkey now living in cyprus, this kifeas my friend is what you guys are breeding and educating over in the south, racist hellenes who hate Turks in all forms and shapes and then........

I will tell you the rest of the story later.
