Me again with my requests!
As you know I'm marrying my Cypriot fiance in Cyprus this year - the hotel's band apparently are a "foreign" band who perform Cypriot music but we'd rather (excuse our Cyprus snobbery) have a band from Cyprus playing traditional music!
Can anyone recommend a really good traditional band (bazouki, fiddle, bongos etc) for a wedding reception at a hotel in Protaras (not too expensive obviously!)
I'd be very grateful

Hi KLB, there used to be a place in Larnaca (don't know if it is still there), its a place where they have Bouzouki live music. They do really great music!
Its called "Seferis", maybe the people are available for your wedding. I don't have the exact address, but when you come from the police station and follow Archbishop Makarios III. avenue towards the port its in one of the small roads to the right if I recall correctly...
Another place where there is 2 musicians sometimes is the Kokos Tavern in Pervolia/Larnaca. (tel 24-422688) I'm sure they can give you the contact details of the musicians. They do traditional stuff and also more modern music...

Much as I love a live bouzouki band, I would give serious thought to the constitution of your guest list before opting for that option. If most of your guests are 1. Cypriot and 2. Older than 40, then a live bouzouki band will go down a treat. However, if you have a mix of english and younger people, in my experience most end up sitting around rather than up and dancing, which is what you want.
At my wedding, we (through contacts) got one of Cyprus' top DJs to do a mixed set for us, beginning for the first hour or so with traditional Cypriot dances, to get everyone up and dancing, and then switched to more modern English/Greek dance music which kept all the young people up and moving until 5am.
Also think about your venue. If it's an outdoor venue, you probably won't be allowed to play loud music after 1am, whereas if it's indoor it depends on where you have it. Where we had our party in Lefkosia, we had to throw people out at 5...
Whichever option you choose I'm sure you'll have an awesome time. I look back on my wedding day/night as the best day of my life, I'm sure it will be yours too. |

Most of our guests are Cypriot - there are only about 20 English people going and trust me, they will love it! We've checked with the hotel and are going inside to a function room for the band/dj.
I will try these bands that you've suggested - thank you. My fiance really wants one and so do I - all of our relatives love it too so we know it will gone down well.
Thankyou again! |

We're probably not having a band - apparently (according to fiance's best man in Nicosia) it's not the norm nowadays - so we've got a friend to do the DJing - a nice mix of English and Greek music!
Just need to practise my kalamatianos now and stop tripping over my own feet! |
