Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos pledged not to sit idle if Turkey continues to refuse to recognize his administration but declined to say if he would use veto rights as a European Union member to block the opening of Turkey's EU accession talks on Oct. 3.
Turkey signed a protocol late last month extending its customs union deal with the EU to the 10 new members, including Greek Cyprus. In a separate declaration, however, Ankara made clear that this does not amount to recognition of the Greek Cypriot administration and that it considers the Greek Cypriot administration as exercising authority only in the territory south of the buffer zone.
The EU Commission said after an initial assessment of the declaration that Turkey had met all the conditions for the start of accession talks. But EU heavyweight France raised recognition of the Greek Cypriot administration as a condition for talks, when Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said earlier this month that it would be ?inconceivable? for Turkey not to do so by Oct. 3.
Papadopoulos is pressing for Turkish recognition but has stopped short of saying that he would use a veto to block opening of accession talks if that recognition is not granted.

| Parading your nuke around is different to actually pressing the launch button. I think he's playing to domestic forces as well as trying to make Ankara consider its options, but in the end I think TPap would become a pariah amongst many European leaders should he actually do it. I also doubt that he'd have Greek support in such an action, so things could get frosty between he and Karamanlis. |

| he probably wont need to use his veto cos france is going to have areferendum on the issue of turkey joining, and i think all polls show a resounding NO to turkey joining. HE wouldnt need to use the veto, i dont think, not until the last minute |

| The French will only have the referandum prior to Turkey becoming a member in 10-15 years time, this article relates to him using the 'veto' prior or on the 3 october this year. |

Dhvalos,
You are a very clever boy, but you need to exprience longer periods of time to undestand that things can change in those long periods of time |

yeh sorry, didnt realise that you were only talking about the 3rd of Oct,
but even so, if he 'played the game', he probably wouldnt need to use the veto, and make cyprus 'look good' for not retaliating at turkeys memebership.
after all, cypruses image is tarneshed after the A-plan referendum ,i think a veto would but the nail in the coffin, but if he held out till a lot longer, then im sure other things will pass that he could put a veto on, eg, human rights etc, of turkey. Or again, wait for the french to do so first. |

| It seems that conflicting reports are emerging from the tassos regime, is this intentional or does the right arm not know what the left arm is doing. |

| It's probably part of an ambiguous policy to keep the Turks guessing... TPap won't show his hand until the meeting next month. |
