Cypriot Turkish speakers have atendancy to eat their words. In other words sounds or phonemes in lexis are often elided. Example: Saga as opposed to Sana. N`aang as opposed to N'apang (I have heard this very often). As Birkibrisli already pointed out, this is more regional.
French Farmers have a similar tendancy to do this. |

Hey, the Greek Cypriot Dialect is actually closer to anciant greek than Modern Greek. THroughout the "greak speaking" world there are many different dialects, but today in Modern Greece "Modern Greek" has taken over from the older dialects, which is a real shame....

actually seeing as ancient greek is a dead language and has been like that for over a thousand years its impossible to tell who actually speaks the most correct greek.
modern greek has definitely diverged and there are a few ancient greek words that the cypriot greek dialect uses
one i know of is the word "pig":
ancient greek = χοίρος (hoiros)
modern greek = γουρόυνι (gourouni)
cypriot greek dialect = χοιρος but pronouned SHEEROS
of course cyprus has had more invaders than your local prostitute so the influences on the local dialect are numerous. |

Hey, I agree there certainly have been alot of Invaders in Cyprus, I like the way you put it, with the prostitute,
I meant the core of the Cypriot dialect not just words, like for example the word "Esou", in ancient greek the U was pronounced with a U sound, however it was changed to an I sound, so now it's "esi"...At least I think thats right, my Dad can explain it better...

again it comes down to nobody ever really being able to know but you are right with that. never actually thought of it. it was believed that the U was pronounced like the latin u but i have my suspicision about that because
a) ancient greek was only written in capitals hence there never really was a U but rather a Y... which is also pronounced I in latin, no?
b) the V and U seem to be interchangable depending on how they were written (Evropa=Europa).
either way this is just from picking up stuff here and there so definitely not an expert opinion.
linguistics is a fascinating subject. im sure the study of both major cypriot dialects would be very interesting. |
