Experts at SophosLabs,believe they have discovered the first virus for the Apple Mac OS X platform.

The virus, named OSX/Leap-A (also known as OSX/Oompa-A) spreads via instant messaging systems.

The virus, the first to be found on the Mac Operating system is likely to send shockwaves through the Apple community.

I got hold of a copy and took it apart (!)

It is crude - it reminds me of Windows viruses of about 7 years ago. For anything to happen rather a lot of work has to be done - one has to:

- explicitly download and open a compressed (tarred, gzipped) file;

- click on a file expanded out from that archive with a type not matching its icon;

- enter the root password when prompted.

(The Mac runs, by default, as a restricted administrator; one has to enter the root password, via sudo, to install anything in anything other than a limited subset of folders).

Also, for reasons which are too arcane to explain here, it will not do anything if people have installed certain types of application before.

Some of the rubbish written about it would be funny if people didn't believe newspapers. For example, this Guardian article considers it is the "first Apple virus" (after 30 years!?) and is of a "new kind" (quite the opposite - it is quaint in the extreme) ...
