a couple of dysi members have invided akel to cooperate in the next presidential elections.
namely hasikos, has said : what does it matter if katsourides is a communist and i am liberal, when our country is under occupation" .
akels first response was to deny the proposal...
would you say that that gives some hope ?
i would say its the only hope |

It is not as simple as that I am afraid. AKEL needs the confrontation with the "ideological enemy" in order to justify its very presence on the political scene. Even during better times for AKEL, an agreement with DISI on minimum grounds ie on a single issue stance such as the Cyprob, has not materialised when AKEL had better and more visionary leadership. It may sound far fetched but I am not sure that a conservative party like AKEL would welcome a solution of the Cyprob that means basically a rewriting of the political map of Cyprus and inevitable loss of many previleges.
I am not being cynical but it is beginning to dawn on me that the calls for solution are never to be trusted and taken on face value. In my opinion, the present leadership of AKEL is placing above the national interests the interest of the party, or better still, the leadership and the hundreds of full time employees of AKEL whose future would be bleak if a solution is found and new political issues begin to dominate the agenda.
Having just one issue dominate our lives (that of the Cyprob) has served well the party apparatchik. |

well i agree that ideological differences dont really exist.
all i could see for years was just a flag difference.
and i agree that they need them in order to survive.
what gives me hope its dysis stance. i am also afraid of akel.
but imagine if pap wants to run for a second time, while dysi gives akel the chance to have for the first time a "leftist" candidate (hopefully not christofias ). it could be indeed self-interest reasons that will bring this cooperation. i mean who knows..?
i am not over-confident, but as i said, i dont see any other way out, besides the two big coopearting. so the fact that the proposal has reached official level is kind of encouranging imo. |

Christofias is quite happy as things stand today. The other day he said "we are not the government, we simply participate in the government". This means that AKEL can reap the benefits for participating in the government as the strongest pillar and at the same time not share any responsibilities for the wrong doings. Thus, Akelites can get appointed to posts that vary, from Ministers to cleaners, keeping the faithful happy and the hope alive for those that were left out since it could be their turn next time round.
I cannot see Christofias running for President, even if Anastasiades handed the presidency to him in a plate. |
