At 1-1 in the Ashes, the Third Test lies heavily in England's favour, although todays rain-hit third day of the test has made a draw a more likely result, particularly with Australia's tail wagging furiously with Shane Warne still at the crease, ably supported by Jason Gillespie's blocking at the other end.
At the close of the day's play, Australia stood at 264-7 in reply to England's total of 444 in the first innings. Shane Warne not out on 78 from 104 deliveries with 10 fours and 1 six, with Gillespie on 7 from 53 balls.
Due to the rain delay today, play resumes early at 1000 tomorrow. |

Lame sport? It depends on the level you played. At the top level shuttlers are among the fittest sportsmen on earth. At this level its probably the fastest sport. You need to see it live to appreciate it. TV doesn't do it any justice.
Erolz, the Canadians call it "bird" but in Cyprus it is the "feather". "Shuttlecock" in the UK and "shuttle" for short. You may manage quite well with your old c..., but probably golfers do a lot better. They only lose their balls ... |

The Ashes Trophy is about 4 inches high, so that must make it the smallest international trophy in any sport.
The origins go back to 1882, when the third Australian team to tour England achieved the unthinkable. Until then, the English had never been beaten on home soil, but Australia, led by by WL Murdoch, shocked the "Mother Country". England, with WG Grace in their ranks, lost by seven runs, Aussie fast bowler Fred Spofforth taking 14 wickets for 90 runs. The following day, a mock obituary ran in the Sporting Times "in affectionate remembrance of English cricket, which died at the Oval on 29th August, 1882". It added: "The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia." Those ashes became a reality when the next England team to tour Australia. The Hon Ivo Bligh was presented with an urn containing the burnt remains of a bail after beating the home side 2-1. |
