What this project tries to do is find the true names of our villages, Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot, in the north and south.

Basically, if a village was Turkish Cypriot, then what we want to know, is what it was called (pre-74) by the villagers (i.e., its actual name, not one given to it by the northern or southern governments). The same goes for the north, for either Turkish Cypriot and/or Greek Cypriot villages.
For mixed villages, we want to know what the village was called by both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.

The way it is set up is as follows:

What I have is an excel spreadsheet(60kb) of villages, from this map(warning 2MB). They are listed below by district (the north is one list, and the larnaca and Republic of Cyprus famagusta district are combined), and then by alphabetical order.
- The first column is the name according to the map.
- The second colomn is the name in greek letters(if applicable)
- The third column is the name in turkish letters (if applicable)
- The fourth colomn is the name in turkish, but in English letters (again, if applicable)

So for example:

Dhavlos : Δαυλος : (none) : (none)
Kokkina : (none) : Koççina : Kochina

What you can do to help, is post the ‘true’ names of the villages you know, by helping me add to the spreadsheet. If you see one that is not done, just post: the number of the village (eg. Afania-3-) and what the name of the village is, like in the above example.

It's not possible to add ot the spreadsheet directly I am afarid. What you can do is post updates in the thread and I / Dhavlos will add them to the spreadsheet, or you can save the spreadheet localy and then email it to me of Dajvlos and we will update the central spreadhseet.

So I'll start off. Here is the Turkish Cypriot names for a couple of places in the north.

Kyrenia = Girne
Templos= Zeytinlik

Well, I don't have Excel installed on this computer. Couldn't you guys post it as an incomplete list at least?

Secondly, I thought the point of the project was to find the true names of the places? For example, Girne is a true Turkish name for Kyrenia because that's how Turkish Cypriots referred to it before 1974 but Zeytinlik is not the true name for Templos, it's a Turkish name given after 1974 and I'm not sure if there was a Turkish name for it before 1974.

Hmm this is more complicated than I thought and possibly I have misunderstood the whole project (sorry if I have). To me I would like a 'resource' that allowed me to take any name (Greek Cypriot, Turkish Cypriot pre 74, Turkish Cypriot post 74) and convert it to any other form. But maybe that's not Dahvlos' objective here. ?

Mete you can get a free excel view utility here (for winxp) - there are others I think for other OS's

yeh, sorry if i wasnt clear before erol, but mete is right...the names before 74 are what i was looking for. Maybe we could add a column for notes, eg the turkified names of the north villages also.

link to the turkified names of villages in the north...

http://www.hri.org/Cyprus/Cyprus_Problem/xwria.html

However, we are looking for the names the people used to call them before 1974.

Also, i have found this website which is quite good...basically, you look for the name of a village/town, and it will list up other names of what the village/town is called(although its main job is a weather forecaster) ...if people can look at this, and post here what the main names are, in greek and turkish letters, then we can put them on the master copy.
http://www.fallingrain.com/world/CY/
Eg.
Ayios Epiktitos
Other names: Aypihtito,Catalkoy,Ayepiktitos,Çatalköy,Saint Epiktitos,Agios Epiktitos,Chatal Keuy

of these, which are 'proper'?

filio, thank you, it was this topic that got me thinking into doing this, but we need more Turkish Cypriots who know what the old names where! (As well as Greek Cypriots who need to help me write the names of the places in greek!)

There is a town, up from Komi Kebir 2-4 km., called, Eftakomi, and it is a majority Greek village as well, which I did not see on the list.

Lapithos is Lapta:
Karavas?
Basillia?
Orca?

BUT are there any new villages in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus?
I think there are few in the South:
Aphrodite Hills
Pantha

There are a total of 199 names down there. Someone speaking Greek will have to add the proper Greek names next to them. Perhaps it is not that hard.

The list is in the New Name - Old Name format.

Cheers.
PS: I found this somewhere on the net. I am not so sure if one of the links above is exactly the same as this, since the link does not seem to work anymore.
