G'day all,
We are all extremely saddened by the untimely loss of the late Turkish Cypriot politician Özker Özgür. To sum it up in two sentences, which is an impossible task, Özker Özgür was one of the most important figures of the Turkish Cypriot community. He led CTP (Republican Turkish Party) for more than 20 years and fought for the rights of all Cypriots without fear. He passed away because of the cancer disease he suffered from on 22 November 2005. He was 65 years old.
When I was going through a list of his selected publications (1) to translate one of them for the thread (2), I came up with the idea of this project: Since he was such a well respected important figure in Cypriot politics, it would be of great importance to have his articles translated into English. In this way, we could help him to reach more people.
This is the section where we will hopefully translate some of the published articles of the Cypriot patriot Özker Özgür. No discussions are allowed in this section, except the discussions related to the Turkish to English translation matters. If you want to discuss about the contents of these articles, please do so in the appropriate sections by citing the corresponding thread in this section.
Everybody is more than welcome to help. Naturally, we need mostly the Turkish speaking volunteers to make the translation from Turkish to English. People who natively speak the English language could help with the corrections of the translations. If you want to help, we have the following procedure:
1. If you want to contribute with a translation, first hit the address (1) with the browser of your choice and pick an article of your choice. When selecting the article, you only have to watch it if someone have already picked it for translation. Verify that nobody has from our headquarters (3).
2. There is a certain organizational format we will follow for maximum efficiency.
a) Each article translation will occupy a separate thread in the section (3), where the article's translation and all related discussion will take place.
b) Each thread will have the title of the article from the address (1) as subjects. The format is "date (dd/mm/yyy), title of the article". For example, "10/5/2005, ORTAK İRADE" (without the quotes).
c) The first post in each thread must contain only the original article in Turkish with a status line (see item d below). Copy & paste it from the address. In this way, we don't have to go to (1) and back when thinking about the translation between Turkish and English all the time.
d) The first line of the first post will be reserved for indicating the status of the work done. This status line is either "STATUS: IN PROGRESS" or "STATUS: COMPLETED". The status of the thread will be discussed in that thread with everybody involved and decided altogether. When the status is completed, we will kindly ask our mods to lock the thread.
e) The last post of the thread will be the finalised translation in English alone.
f) Post your output as messages in the thread. Please learn how to use quoting and fonts of the forum while posting if you still do not know. They could be effective tools in this task. If you are proposing grammatical corrections to an output of a volunteer, use bold fonts etc. to emphasize your changes while leaving other lines untouched, i.e. no bold font. Try to quote the previous posts minimally. For example, quote only the necessary paragraph if there are no improvements you would like to propose to the others. I think you get the idea.
3. Make sure you use proper Turkish fonts. I can help you how to install and configure your computer if you are using linux or unix based operating systems. Please ask around if you use windows and don't know how to do it, Erol is perhaps a good choice. If you are so desperate, pm your output to me and I'll make it proper.
4. The forum has a built-in spell checker. Use it!
5. Procedural matters about the project should be posted in this very thread alone, no new threads please.
6. Thank you very much if you are a contributor of this project. I'd like to thank Erol for providing us room in the first place to do this. Thanks mate!
Cheers.

| Erol, there seems to be a problem with the board. Although the fonts in the posts are appearing ok, the subject lines do not. What's going on? Could this be fixed? |

I am not entirely sure what is going on here. I will have a look around and see if I can sort this, but you may just have to live with if not. Sorry |

| Φzker Φzgόr had a series of articles in the Sunday Fileleftheros, from the 22nd Feb 2004 onwards, even until the last few weeks before he passed away. Personally, I have always followed them and found them very stimulating, and food for thought. I guess the least that can be done is to translate those in English, for the interested readers. I'll start posting some translations in this section, including the greek `original' for any corrections that btw are mostly welcome. |

I don't think he wrote in Politis, only Phileleftheros. |
