hehe.....well, once you get going on differences, there is a whole new language called 'gringlish'

greek-english --> gringlish....

invented by cypriots/greeks who moved to britain, and my yiayia is one of the many fluent speakers! Laughing Laughing

english.....greek....gringlish
eg
chicken....kotoboulo......chicki
kettle.....(i dunno)......kettlo
dustbin.....kalathi......dusbi

it is so funny when i ask my yiayia what things are...she gives me the english, but in a Greek Cypriot accent. And then i say, what is actually the greek word, and she tries to justify her first answer...lol....it is amusing, for us both.

Also, with gringlish....if you forget a word in greek, just use the english. Works everytime!

G'day everyone,

I really enjoy this kind of "word hunting". Okay, here we go:

In cyprus the word for the little 'saucepan/pot' used to make greek/turkish coffee in is called a 'flitzani', rather than in greece where it is called a 'mbriki'.

Cezve and fincan are the words for coffee pot and coffee cup (the little one), respectively. Dav, is it possible that you mixed it up? Or perhaps the word was wrongly used in your village?

yeah, i think it is mbriki.. and mbrikoui if its a small one! Very Happy

This one I just heard. But the following link explains why Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
